SYNOPSIS

SWEET CHARITY - THE STORY OF A GIRL WHO JUST WANTED TO BE LOVEDWe are introduced to Charity Hope Valentine on a date with her ho-hope boyfriend Charlie "Dark Glasses". We soon gather that the relationship is rather one-sided as Charlie doesn't say a waord, but Chrity is smitten. Charlie is exposed when he snatches her dowry and pushes her in the lake.Back at the Fandango Ballroom, where she works as a "social consultant", Charity decides that she's not going to be hurt again. Then, on her way home, outside the up-market Pompeii club, she runs into the film star, Vittorio Vidal, who is arguing with his beautiful girlfriend, Ursala. To spite Ursala, Vittorio whisks Charity into the club. The clientele inside the club are very aloof towards Charity. Vittorio asks Charity to dance, but in the excitement she steps on his foot and faints. Vittorio does not know what to do with Charity who is collapsed in his arms; Charity, herself, suggests that he lay her down - in his apartment!Later, at his place, after realising that there is no possibility of her becoming romantically involved with Vittorio as he is in love with Ursala, she asks for an autographed picture and souvenirs to show the girls back at the Fandango ballroom. But Ursala returns, and Charity has to hide in the closet all night, looking on to Vittorio and Ursala are reunited!Once again, at the Fandango Ballroom, Charity and the girls decide that there must be better than being groped by the Fandango's customers/ Charity visits the YMCA in an attempt to find culture and refinement and to meet new people. But she gets stuck inthe lift with the claustrophobic accountant, Oscar. Charity helps Oscar through his ordeal and on their escape, Oscar invites Charity to a meeting at the Rhythm Of Life church. For a weirdo, he's quite nice!As their relationship progresses, Charity gets increasingly concerned with the fact that Oscar believes she is a bank clerk. As she is going to give up her job this lie does not seem so bad - but when she does finally confess - Oscar announces that he knew anyway, as he saw her going into the ballroom and he followed herin; he did not stay long - only an hour or so. Nevertheless, he wants to marry her.The girls at the ballroom hold a party for Charity. But Oscar is beginning to have a few doubts. He cannot deal with Charity's past relationships. he tells that he cannot marry her. But Charity is consoled by the fact that she still has her dowry and that she did not get tattooed again. Maybe things are beginning to look up for her.
